How Sports Betting Shows Up on Your Tax Return

Hey sports fans! Hitting a big bet during the weekend games feels amazing. But before you spend those unexpected winnings, don’t forget there’s one more hurdle to clear: taxes. Tax rules can be confusing, so here’s a simple, easy-to-understand guide to how the government taxes your sports betting winnings.

Rule #1: If You Win Money, the IRS Wants a Share

Let’s start with the most important rule: If you win money, it’s taxable. Whether you win $50 on a regular basketball game or $5,000 betting on the Super Bowl, the IRS treats those winnings as taxable income. You must report every dollar you win on your federal tax return.

But How Does the Government Know?

You may be wondering: “How does the IRS know that I won money?” The answer is a tax form called Form W-2G. For sports betting, if both of the following conditions are met, the sportsbook is generally required to report your winnings to the IRS:

  • Your winnings are $600 or more, and
  • Your payout is at least 300 times your original wager.

If you meet both requirements, the sportsbook will issue you a Form W-2G. In some cases, they may even withhold part of your winnings for federal taxes before sending you the money.

Let’s Use John as an Example:

John places a $10 parlay bet with very long odds and wins $3,500. Because his winnings are more than $600 and his payout is 350 times his wager, the sportsbook will automatically issue him a Form W-2G. Now consider a different situation. John bets $1,000 on a heavy favorite and cashes out $1,500, making a $500 profit. Since the payout is not at least 300 times his wager, he generally won’t receive a W-2G. But here’s the important part: Even if you don’t receive a W-2G, the law still requires John to report that $500 gambling profit on his federal tax return.

A Helpful Tip

If you plan to deduct your gambling losses, you’ll need proof. Be sure to save your sportsbook betting history, account statements, transaction records, and screenshots. Keeping good records will make tax filing much easier if you ever need to document your gambling losses.
